Ajay Shah is Executive Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King’s, BHF Professor of Cardiology, James Black Professor of Medicine, and Director of the King's BHF Centre of Research Excellence. He is an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at King’s College Hospital.
He trained in medicine and cardiology at the University of Wales, undertook doctoral research training in Wales and Belgium, and was a postdoctoral scientist at the National Institutes of Health (USA) in the early 1990s. He was appointed to the Chair of Cardiology at King’s in 1998. His clinical expertise includes interventional cardiology and heart failure.
Ajay has a long-standing track record of innovative research in the pathophysiology of heart failure, both in experimental models and patients. He has published seminal work on the roles of redox signalling, nitric oxide and NADPH oxidase proteins in heart failure. The current experimental focus of his lab is on altered intermediary metabolism as a driver of heart failure, employing integrative approaches including in vivo gene-modified models, stable isotope-resolved metabolomics and human iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes and engineered heart tissue. His clinical work includes first-in-human experimental medicine studies in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory, clinical informatics & AI, and clinical trials. He has an h-index of 123.
Ajay is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, the International Society for Heart Research, the European Society of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association.
